Darfur Diaries(Entry 8)

Comments:
  1. They continues this journey and found another parent with two children in the verge of dying. They were dirty, filthy and sick.
  2. They began to film wit women and boys, as the tried to act normal.
  3. African union troops were being deployed to Darfur and they hoped they would ensure calm in the region.
  4. Aisha took many photo's so she would be able to elaborate more as to exactly how the people were feeling at the time.
  5. They would usually sleep at any random site, they would just pull out a tent and sleep. I don't understand how they had the courage to do so, knowing the situation the family was in.


Question:

  1. Why isn't Aisha scared of what might happen to them while they are there, like attacks and such?
  2. Where is the safety of the village? no guards?
  3. Why don't they just send the kids out or evacuate this village?
  4. Is Aisha, and Adam actually safe?

Summary sentence:
  • Aisha took many photos along with her team, they are now more comfortable with the people and they are more friendly with them as well. The people of Darfur find it very amusing that they are exploring their village.

Darfur Diaries(Entry 7)

Comments:

  1. Kirtir Congo preached about his pain and agony on how their lives must be and how they are suffering everyday.
  2. "you came over here to find the truth and understand our sorrow. Please take our message to all the other nations"(pg121) Kirtir seems to be fed up with the way they live their life, he would like this message to be sent out to other countries so they can understand the way they are living is absolutely ridiculous.
  3. Dero is trying to provide Alisha and Adam with care since they are trying to do the same as well.
  4. At this time they found out that president Bush will be the president of The United States of America again, and they are very disappointed.
  5. The Arabs killed Ibrahim's people and goats, which is why he hates them so much. I don't understand why there must be so much tension with people from the same country, shouldn't they just love each other instead.

  1. Why cant Aisha understand that some countries are raised to be generous and offer people things such as tea?
  2. Did they feel as if they were not going to get as much help since president Bush was the president again?
  3. Why did they depend so much on the Americans rather than other countries?

  1. They encounter more children who hold even more sad stories that touches every ones heart. these kids are being tortured continuously, over and over again.

Darfur Diaries(Entry 6)

Comments:
  1. The children continued to face an extreme precarious existence.
  2. They found a child, Tugud, laying over his mothers lap with a shawl around him, and they instantly knew something was wrong with him.
  3. These children lacked energy and fuel in their bodies, they were very unhealthy.
  4. They began to help the kids and the kids were not as afraid of them.
  5. Aisha began the journey and on her way the made a stop at Dero. Soon when they were back on their way they encountered a woman climbing up the hill with a group of cows. being Tauruses they took pictures of the woman and cow.



Question:

  1. Were the getting paid for this ?
  2. How are the kids going to actually survive?
  3. since the way they lived, lacking food, etc. how did the parents make it? were they just the "lucky ones"?
  4. Where do they plan on stopping?

  • Aisha and the rest continued their journey, and since they were so caring they continued to put close attention on the children that were in need. During their journey they observed many unusual things, such as a herd of cows walking by with a woman.

Darfur Diaries(Entry 5)

Comments:

  1. Many of the children is suffering from Malnutrition; due to diarriah.
  2. Discolored hair was a sign of malnutrition.
  3. Instead of the police protecting and helping them, the police would usually kill them, which is just as worst.
  4. As stated the children did not really know much about the good things in life; they mostly new all about the negative things. If you were to ask them to draw something they would draw guns, and people fighting.
  5. While they were shown around the village they noticed all the negative parts of this community, the emptiness and devastation.

Question:

  1. Why didn't they just send out the kids to a better place, community, family?
  2. At school they should have introduced kids to the good things in life and encouraged them rather then making them feel the way the feel; why didn't they?
  3. Couldn't they just send adults to fight off instead of children?
  4. Since this keeps on bothering me, why did they make it seem so hard for the children to be like normal children?

Summary sentence:

  • These couple of pages made me open my eyes more as to how the children were feeling and it really makes me question why the kids had to live this way.

Darfur Diaries(Entry 4)

Comments:

  1. Mathijs was worried; because of the children being as soliders, fighting.
  2. Statistics show three-hundred thousand children were estimated to be involved in armed violence, specifically in Africa.
  3. Mathijs was stationed in Abeche for six months.
  4. Girls often stop attending school at the higher grade levels because they begin to take care of their younger siblings.
  5. Darfur needed to be protected but Africa did not come soon enough to help them at all.
Question:

  1. If the Girls left school so early, what made the boys not? did they not have to work, to help the family out money wise?
  2. Why couldnt they just use the adults to fight rsther than poor, innocent children?
  3. Why didn't Africa pull through with their promise?
  4. Why was it so hard for Darfur to defend their ownselves? did they lack resource, because Africa did not have much either?

Summary sentence:

  • These few pages spoke about the hardwork the children would put into the Darfur, and how much they had to sacrafise. It also elaborates more on the type of situation the people/ residence there were in.

Darfur Diaries(Entry 3)

Comments:
  1. They were finally able to settle down; They were told to stay in a tent because the place is actually really disgusting and mosquitoes are everywhere.
  2. They started in the north and worked their way down south; North did not have much fighting occurring at the time.
  3. Deby was from the Bahai area and from the Zaghawa tribe.
  4. Desertification was investing in Darfur at an alarming rate.
  5. People volunteered to be teachers and teach the children, even though they did not have tents they taught them on the bare sand.

Questions:

  1. Why are they settled in the North, why wont they keep moving down south?
  2. Is it safer for them to stay in the North verses the South?
  3. Are these teachers professionals or just regular people willing to teach these children?
  4. Why is Melissa so secretive as to what she is doing, why didn't she tell her from the beginning.

  • These couple of pages reveals the type of environment they are all living in; Melissa is in a different area, but doesn't quite reveal the truth as to why she was there.

Darfur Diaries(Entry 2)

Comments:
1. In 1916 sudan gained independence from Britain.
2. South war had broken out in 1955 over Islamization; but ended in fragile peace in 1973.
3. "Jen had insisted on staying in Darfur because she fell in love with someone from the Dinka Tribe." -- funny joke
4. Jen is learning how to work a camera so she would be able to film as well and interview people.
5. I guess it runs in the family, being adventurous, Adams mother also did similar journeys as well.

Questions:
  1. What makes them want to go here specifically?
  2. Are the getting paid?
  3. Is it actually a family thing to journey around the world for Adam?
  4. How long do they plan on staying in Chad/ Darfur?

Darfur Diaries( Entry 1)


Comments:
  1. Many world powers were hungrily anticipating an agreement, waiting for safe and full access to the country's oil reserves that is in the middle of the battleground for the last few decades.
  2. Seems as if a war is going to break loose since they closed down the borders of Darfur.
  3. Darfur was one of the regions that opposed rge government; it was an "impoverished" area with little developement.
  4. Marches were developed they walked 3miles in a candlelight vigil to the sundanese embassy. they also gave speeches and accounts of the victims, the crimes, and cries for action.
  5. Their goals were to concentrate on children, since they are among the most "marginalized" population- they were usually the ones who suffered way more, physically and mentally.

Questions:

  1. Was this actually a war or just a break out?
  2. How old is the Narrator?
  3. Since they were in so much suffering, why didnt they simply move out of the area? move to another land?
  4. Why did they believe that the world would act out vecause of the anniversary of the genocide in Rwanda?

  • These couple of pages were basically an intorduction to the Darfur Story. It sums up th begining of their struggles and how they begin to overcome it.

Comments:

  1. Lily is still stressed about the situation with her mother being dead.
  2. Zach is going to attend a "White" School, which is a big change for him, especially since he met Lily.
  3. T-Ray figures out where Lily is and in an instinct he reports to her, as usual he yells at her and commands her to leave with him, but because of August he decided to leave Lily behind, basically forever.
  4. In between that time you would realize that the reason why he treated Lily so rudely was because he seen Deborah, his wife in Lily.
  5. Lily is now permanently part of the family, exactly how her mother was raised by August.

Questions:

  1. If May did not die would have June still said yes to Neil's proposal?
  2. Since Lily's mom was raised by august and now Lily is as well, is Lily's life just going to be a repetition of her mothers?
  3. Does Lily see her mother in her, rather than the pain of her not being with her?
  4. The way he treats Lily relates back to the way he treated his wife?"

Summary:

  • At the end of the book Lily ends up staying with the family and you finally realize that T-Ray was also in pain of Deborah, his wife, Lily's mom leaving. Also, finally Rosaleen feels like a whole new women because she is finally pulled through, and voted.


The Secret Life of Bees (entry9)

Comments:

  1. Lily finally let out her feelings about her situation with her family to August
  2. August tells Lily the story about her mother and all Lily could do is cry at the thought of her mom "leaving" her.
  3. Soon Lily then becomes furious at all the thoughts of her mother, the stress and breaks loose, experessing and letting out her feelings.
  4. Lily's mom had left ranaway from home as well because of her stress with T- Ray.
  5. Lily is ready to reveal the truth about her life to Zach.

Questions:

  1. Did Lily really have trust in August to tell her or was it for pity?
  2. The fact that Lily's mom ran away to August, and now Lily herself is running away, have a symbolic meaning?
  3. What makes Lily want to let Zach know about her life?
  4. Will Lily plan on leaving, back home?

Summary:

Lily was finally able to learn the truth about her mother after all this time, she learned that she was actually the cause of her mothers death. Lily begins to realize that her mother actually did love her.

Comments:
  1. Lily keeps thinking about her mother uncontrollably, everything and everyone seems to remind her of her mother.
  2. Zach and his friends were all arrested for something he did not do.
  3. They try not to tell May about the incident with Zach in jail, but she soon find out and commits suicide.
  4. Lily learned that June did know her mother.
  5. June and Neil are now engaged, since May wanted her to live her life to the "fullest"( from the letter she left them before her death.)

Questions:

  1. When Zach got arrested it was manly because they were dark skinned kids not because the police thought they were not telling the truth?
  2. Does the suicide of May relate back to her sister's suicidal incident as well?
  3. Was it a twin thing, too much pain may have led them to giving up?
  4. Did June finally say yes to Neil manly because of the lost of her sister?

Comments:
  1. August finally made it clear as to why she did not want to get married; because she felt as if she didn't want to give up her autonomy.
  2. Racism becomes a common thing in this chapter. It is portrayed numerous times.
  3. Lily is hurt by the picture she sees in Mr. Forest office, the picture of him and his daughter.
  4. She decides to call her Dad and speak to him herself, but she could not explain to him anything, all her did was yell at her like he usually does.
  5. Lily writes a letter to her dad expressing her feelings towards him, the way speaks to her, the way he treats her, etc.

Questions:

  1. If a white man is dating a black women then it must be legal, why are they making it a big deal?
  2. Was Lily hurt by the picture of Mr. Forest and his daughter? did it remind her of the relationship she did not have with her dad?
  3. Is Lily suddenly depressed and becoming weaker/ letting her emotions show more?
  4. Why does she call the "Black Mary" 'Mother'? Does it remind her of her own?

Comments:
  1. Lily finally gets the story out of August about "Black Mary." She refers to her as "Our Lady of Chains."
  2. Lily is nervous if the police comes searching for her, not only because she escaped but because she stole and got Rosaleen to escape.
  3. A young boy by the name of Neil likes June but June refuses to be with him, and marry him.
  4. Lily and Zach become closer as friends and Lily's feelings begin to grow for him.
  5. Rosaleen and May grow a relationship and Lily is now jealous, which relates to the relationship between Lily and August where Rosaleen was jealous.

Questions:

  1. What are the real reasons why June does not want to marry Neil.
  2. Why isn't any of the family (3 sisters) married?
  3. Why does Zach believe the society does not want them to be together, if it is real love then nothing should stop them, right?
  4. What is the reason why May likes the presence of Rosaleen?

Comments:
  1. The family knows that Rosaleen and Lily are not who they portray themselves to be.
  2. May works as the piano person who plays the piano at wakes for the dead people.
  3. The reason why May changes her behavior so quickly is because of the death of her twin sister April, because they were so close, ever since her death shes been troubled.
  4. August plays with Lily's mind to try and find out if she is telling the truth or not.
  5. Rosaleen was jealous because Lily spend all her time with August rather than here.

Questions:

  1. What makes the family think they are not who they portray to be?
  2. Why did April choose to kill her self so sudden?
  3. Is the reason why she works at the funeral home for the dead because of the death of her twin sister?
  4. When will Lily realize what she is trying to ( stay with August) is not going to happen?

10/21/08

Comments:


  1. Lily and Rosaleen set off to find a place to stay. When Lily went to try and find food for Rosaleen and herself she seen a picture of "Black Mary," created by August Boatwright; without hesitation Lily set off looking for her.
  2. August and her sister June, and sister who has died April all of the name of Months because their mother was very fond of spring time.
  3. Lily knows that she is the cause of her mothers death.
  4. Rosaleen and Lily made up a whole new story about their lives and told it to August, so she can get more out of this situation.
  5. Lily will work with August and Zach on making the honey for the bee's while Rosaleen will help June in the house, until their stay is over.

Questions:

  1. Why is Lily so fond of the "Black Mary"?
  2. What makes her think that she will get something out of visiting the lady who made the "Black Mary"?
  3. Did August have a past history with Lily's mother?
  4. Does Lily really think she is going to stay with this family forever? and the truth is not going to come out in the light?

Summary:

  • Both Lily and Rosaleen settle down at the home of August, with a different disguise, as people they are not. Lily is still determined to find out about her mother.

The Secret Life of Bees (entry3)

Comments:
  1. T-Ray told Lily a whole a new story about her mother; that she left the family before her death.
  2. Lily decided to escape her life with T-Ray, by running away, so she did so, and took all her things and left a letter for T-Ray proving she can careless about him.
  3. Lily helped Rosaleen escape as well; and they both ended up running off to to Tiburon; hoping to hear something about her mother from someone.
  4. Rosaleen and Lily settled at a little cave like place till the sun came up for the to continue their adventure, to find out more about her mother
  5. Lily is confused at the fact that many places don't except the presence of a colored woman.

Questions:

  1. Is T-Ray actually lying to Lily or is he trying to cover the truth of her moms death?
  2. Does Lily still not know that she was the cause of her mother's death?
  3. Why is it so hard for Rosaleen to cooperate with the men, to be sent free?
  4. I don't understand why T-Ray is so cruel to Lily. Is it because she accidentally killed her mother?

  • This chapter had allot of twists to it. Lily ran away from home and has opened her eyes to the way T-Ray treats her, she is determined to find out more about her mother along with Rosaleen by her side.

10/20/08

Comments:
1. Lily's birthday is on July 4th, she says" i had the same birthday as the country.." where she believes she receives no love or attention because of it.
2. Lily is lonely counting the fact that she does not have many people in her life, especially her mother.
3. Her dad; T-Ray finally told her what happened to her mother, from their arguments to the fights. We know that Lily accidentally killed her mother, which explains why her dad didn't want to tell her.
3. Rosaleen was acting disrespectful towards the workers in the villa and they encountered racism.
5. Rosaleen and Lily get arrested for Rosaleen spilling juice on three white men's shoes.
6. T-ray disrespected Lily and told her, her own mother did not love her, which was really harsh especially at the age Lily is at.

Questions:
1. Why wont Rosaleen provide Lily with the support she needs, knowing she has no one?

Comments:
1. The first couple of pages i was introduced to this new character by the name of Lily, who is very interested in Bee's.
2. As Lily the story continues we come to figure that her mother is dead, and the fact that she is not around is haunting her.
3. Lily lives with her dad and her "stand-in mother" by the name of Rosaleen; who nurtures her like a mother, while her dad is not the definition of a father to her.
4. Lily reminisces on her mother and the last day she seen her before she died. The facts and memory are blur at this point to her and she wants to find out more of it, but her dad refuses to speak of it.
5. "On July 2, 1964.. the president of United states signed the Civil Rights Act into the law in the East Room of the White house.."

1. Did Lily kill her mother?
2. How long will T.Ray take to tell Lily the truth about her mother?
3. How did Rosaleen fit into the family? Who was she before she became a counterfeit mother to Lily?
